Reading with children is essential to their brain development and enhances bonding with their parent or caregiver. Reach Out and Read Illinois partners with doctors to ensure that children and families have the books, guidance, and encouragement they need to have the brightest future possible!
When I was a child, my parents read to me every night. First, it was fairy tales, then "I Can Read Books", and then Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. Larkin and I continued the tradition with our four kids. No matter what the day had held, ending it snuggled in bed, sharing a story with each child brought smiles, peace, and a sense that all was well. I want children and parents all across Illinois to have that same feeling. And I want all kids to experience the thrill of receiving a brand new book every time they visit their pediatrician and the anticipation of opening it again and again as it becomes their new "favorite". Reach Out and Read provides books and training to doctors and clinics, especially in marginalized communities. Every time a child visits their doctor from 6 months to five years, they receive a brand new book. Our latest initiative is making sure that our books are diverse, so that children can see kids just like themselves in their favorite books.
I am partnering with a fantastic clinic, Lawndale Christian Health Center. If my team raises the most money, Lawndale Christian Health Center will receive a $2,000 gift certificate from All About Books, ensuring that children and families will continue to get the books they need. If I have the most donors, my clinic will receive a $1,000 gift card. All our participating clinics will receive a box of brand new books.
