Our clinic's story:
Friend Health serves families on the south side of Chicago – Hyde Park, Woodlawn, Back of the Yards, Englewood and others. Our clinic's neighborhoods are from 4700 south to 5800 south – the most underserved neighborhoods in the Chicago region.
Our pediatric population is primarily covered by Illinois Medicaid insurance and identify as African-American and Latinx, as well as white and Asian-American. ROR is critical to our clinic – many of our parents are single and struggle to find the time and resources to build at home libraries. This program is instrumental in increasing our patients exposure to books and words.
Research has repeatedly shown the impact of that early exposure and engagement with language on the youngest of our vulnerable children. By helping them build a home library and having frequent discussions with the parent about how they can impact their child’s future, we are performing the best of preventive medicine.
